Little to play for between these two teams in reality but bragging rights is always something I suppose and rather true to recent form it eluded United as they slipped to another desperate defeat. The early signs were good as United started brightly S Morris slipping Tony Farquhar into the box albeit on his weaker side but unfortunately he delayed the shot far too long and A Bremner recovered to produce a fine blocking tackle. Five minutes later Despy missed another good chance when Farquhar won a Bell freekick in the area and it dropped perfectly for the in rushing midfielder but as has been noticeable in United’s finishing of late power was elected for when a little composure would have sufficed. That was it in terms of positive notes for United for the next 30 mins as they slipped behind first a Bain ball into the edge of the box was miscontrolled by Grant Steven and Michael Bremner wasted no time latching on to the loose ball , spinning and firing home via the finger tips of Gray. Five minutes later it got even worse a speculative ball into the area was controlled by Marc Begg who promptly fell on his face allowing Paul Mackay to gleefully step inside him and fire passed Gray to leave United shell-shocked. Slowly they managed to get a foothold in the game but Halkirk were obviously buoyed by the fact that they had not had to play particularly well to gain a 2 nil advantage. A decent move saw Farquhar release Marc Begg down the right but his low cross was comfortably dealt with by Allan at the near post. The keeper was called into action just before half time when Despy picked out Daffy when a corner was half cleared to him but yet again the keeper showed good hands. In between times Lee Sutherland succumbed to a head knock after a clash with L Bremner on the edge of the box.
Half time
Pentland United 0-2 Halkirk
United started the second half full of intention but struggling slightly against the Halkirk counter through Elder and M Bremner. Gradually however United started to get on top as perhaps the weekend exertions started to tell on their opponents. Young Ryan Begg was showing up well in the midfield and eh carved open a great chance for Stevie Morris who whipped in a great cross which seemed destined for Daffy to knock home until a great interception from Stevie Elder thwarted the attack. There was plenty of endeavour on show as both sides attacked well but really failed to create any real goal scoring chances of note regularly good crossing positions were stopped at the near post frustrating fans and players alike. United were handed a lifeline with just over ten minutes to go when Farquhar latched on to a through ball and as he prepared to shoot A Bremner hauled back his shooting leg, referee Wheatcroft gave the penalty but only booked the defender for the offence. Farquhar assumed the responsibility and fired home his 7th goal of the season drawing him level with Steven Morris at the top of the charts. United had one final chance when right at the death a Bell cross was headed narrowly wide by Marc Begg as United continued their barren spell.

Not much to say really opened up well but a couple of slips later we are 2 behind just one of those things when things are running against you. Not an awful lot to report in all honesty plenty of endeavour but very little goalmouth action. Now to DA Shield duty and our last chance to salvage something from the season although I don’t think the bookies will be inundated with people backing us on current form.
